The Great One
Kwik Jones has been writing, directing, and producing plays for thirty years. A theater major at Goddard College. Kwik has developed plays such as: A Strange Seed, Forgotten Soul, Voices, Black Like Me, Jupiter is Stormy, Spotlight, The Code, Puzzle Dream, Conversations, Organ, L.U.S.T, Both Sides of the Fence, Sweet Mother Jones, Memphis Bound, Water Boyz, A Cup of Life, Man’s Favor, Devil’s Plan, and many more.
Awards and honors are such: winner of the 2024 NACCP Theatre Award for Best Playwright for a 99-seat theatre. The Portland Civic Theatre Guilds New Play Award, for his play Cat Napper. A finalist for the Downtown Urban Arts Festival in New York City for his plays Memphis Bound. In 2021 his plays Water Boyz would be a finalist for the Downtown Urban Arts Festival and selected as a finalist for the PNMC New Play Readers Series Festival. Kwik was named a semifinalist for the Lanford Wilson Festival for the play The Closet Pigeon. Also in 2021, Kwik was commissioned by The Robey Theatre in Los Angeles, California for a new work: Man’s Favor, Devil’s Plan, that premiered in Los Angeles at the Robey Theatre, October 2022.
His play A Strange Seed was chosen as one of the six finalists in The Portland Civic Theatre Guilds New Play Award and was named a semifinalist at the 2022 National Playwrighting Conference. 2022 Kwik was named a semifinalist for the Jewish Plays Project in New York City for his play, Paper Listens. A semifinalist for the National Black Theatre’s I am Soul Playwright’s Residency Program. Co-winner of the 2022 Texas State University Black and Latino Play Celebration for his play his A Cup of Life. In 2022 Kwik was also accepted into the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center’s Artist Grant and Residency Program in Portland, Oregon.
In 2023 Kwik became a three-time finalist at Downtown Urban Arts Festival for his play, A Cup of Life, which was also named a 2023 semifinalist for the National Playwrighting Conference. Also, in 2023 Kwik became a two-time finalist of The Portland Civic Theatre Guilds New Play Award, for his play The Invisible Jews. The summer of 2023 Kwik’s play Water Boyz was read at the Bare Essentials Play Reading Series in Atlanta, Georgia. His ten-minute TYA play, Finding Belief, premiered at GhostLight Ensemble’s Make/Believe Play Festival. Also, his one-act play, Two White Stripes was produced January 2023, by Coho Theatre Productions in Portland, Oregon.
His success continues in 2024, as his play: Man’s Favor, Devil’s Plan was nominated for 14 NAACP Theater Awards including Best Playwright for a 99-seat theater. His ten-minute play The Blind Thief was accepted into the Black Men Talk Play Festival in Chicago, Illinois, and his one-act The Ride was accepted into the 12th Annual Columbus Black Theatre Festival, in Columbus, Ohio. His stellar play, A Cup of Life will be read this summer at the Atlanta Theater Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently he is working on a new play, We Act, which he has been commissioned to write for the upcoming book: Every Great Dream: Visioning African American Theater for Young Audiences, which will be published by Dramatic Publishing. He’s also commissioned by Collective Consciousness, in New Haven, Connecticut, to write a BIPOC Superhero play that will be published on Dramatic Publishing.
